How To Travel By Plane With Mobility Scooters?

Make sure you are properly prepared to enjoy a trouble-free trip when traveling with a mobility scooter

If you are looking to travel with a mobility scooter, then you know that there are some challenges ahead. After all, simply getting through the airport is a challenge enough! Here, we will show you the important steps to take before and during your trip when traveling with your mobility scooter. Finally, we will show you how Desert Medical can help make traveling easier for you or someone you love with mobility needs.

Before Your Trip

Be sure to contact your airline and let them know that you are traveling with your mobility scooter at least 48 hours before your flight. There is no charge for traveling with your mobility scooter. That being said, each airline will have its own policies when it comes to traveling with a mobility device. Here are some of the questions that an airline may ask about your mobility scooter:

  • The scooters make and model

  • Battery type

  • Battery size

Also, be aware that you may have to complete some documentation when you get to the airport. Therefore, you should plan to get to the gate at least an hour before takeoff.

Boarding Your Flight With Your Mobility Scooter

Once you arrive at the airport, check your mobility scooter with the airline’s customer service. At this point, the mobility scooter will be taken to the plane by an airline employee. The airline will provide you with a wheelchair to assist you through security, customs, and any other checkpoint.

When you arrive at the gate, you will be among the first passengers that will be boarded the plane. Upon your arrival, the airline will escort you to the baggage claim area where you will be able to pick up your scooter.

Protecting Your Mobility Scooter During Flight

As you probably already know, airlines can lose luggage and other items. That can include your mobility scooter. Therefore, you will want to have proper documentation in case your mobility scooter is lost. The best advice is to take multiple photos of your mobility scooter and have it accessible on your smartphone. Also, be sure to have your name on the device. Yes, the airline may put a tag on the mobility scooter. However, your identifier will also help. Finally, photos may provide you with some proof if your mobility scooter happens to be damaged during the flight.
